P-F23: Choosing Wisely - Finding Pathways You Actually Already Know About Because You Are Reading This

Image
This is a football pick’em contest. I know that, and you probably know that, but what if it was way more? Go straight to the registration page if you are more about picking winners than almost certainly probably changing your friggin life. Here is Your Four-Part Plan to The Best Outcomes in Life When digging up the courage to write this inspirational recruitment piece, I did what any of us would do given such an overwhelming task: I asked a chatbot. However instead of a four-part solution to making the best choices, she took me through an adventure down a well cleared path in a dense and mysterious forest. Almost immediately after embarking -- like after the first few trees on the edge of this dense forest -- a fork appeared. And just as it is always written, one path was well-trodden, bathed in warm sunlight, and adorned with vibrant flowers. The other path was -- and remember folks, I’m only a step inside the woods, and like, maybe just through some brush -- the other path was shrou...

P-F21: Dear Future Self, These 21 Thoughts Are Why You Are Glad You Read the Official Pick'em Dash Football ’21 Annual Recruitment Post

1 I once watched this planetarium show on dark matter. I’m familiar with matter. I’m not saying current or future me could define it, but it is like -- stuff. However dark matter isn’t the dark stuff. Dark matter is like all the other stuff that we aren’t familiar with, and on top of that, apparently the universe contains an unknown amount of matter that we cannot observe! 2 Speaking of matter, small wins matter. Not only do small wins add up to major accomplishments, but small wins have also been shown to give enormous emotional boosts. (I think you see where I am going with this.) 3 Enough said. I am ready to sign up at 3, and I am ready to fill out the registration form . 4 Each year we play 4 games that are guaranteed to keep your weekends interesting from the end of August until mid-February. 5 Game #1: NCAA Pick’em (played against the spread) 15 games per week Games will list a point spread for you to pick against Contest represents approximately 1/3 of the registration pot; Both...

The Official 2020 Pick'em Dash Football Annual Recruitment Post

Good day, everyone. Nah I'm faking. It's 2020, and I know a lot of you folks are reluctant to make any sports picking right now or even make any choices at all. I get it. But I'm typing this tonight because I love picking football with all my heart, and it pains me to see so many people not competing to see who makes the best choices. Ready to sign up? Use the "too long, didn't read" link at the end of this sentence to go straight to the registration form .  I've met less than half of you. However, I've read your bonus responses, and through you, I have posted things that have surely changed the course of our lives. Through blood, toil, spit, grit, and stick-to-it-veness, we are still mostly hanging in there despite the World trying to stop us. That's the story of Pickem-Dash-Football. I'm not sure there is much else to say. We just need to grab our comfortable shorts and t-shirts and be willing to do what needs to be done to pick thirty or so ...

The Official 2019 Pick'em Dash Football Annual Recruitment Post

Don’t Sleep On Pick’em Dash Football Science does not fully understand why sleeping is necessary, but you and I empirically understand sleeping is vital to our bodies’ health and cognitive functions. Good morning, you guys. It is the dawn of the 2019 football season. Ready to sign up? Use the "too long, didn't read" link at the end of this sentence to go straight to the registration form .  By the close of last season, you were probably experiencing a decrease in mental functions, a distorted sense of time, a lack of awareness to your job and family, and – God bless you – all weekend day and night game watching fatigue. While I’m sure you didn’t realize any of this at the time, you are better off today than you were last February. While you rested, your P-F-cells raced around inside, repairing and restoring all your questionable decisions made while you were weak and vulnerable. Did You Dream About It? Last pick’em season, your brain worked hard to make all th...

The Official 2018 Pickem-Football Annual Recruitment Post

Ready to sign up? Use the "too long, didn't read" link at the end of this sentence to go  straight to the registration form . Do you wish you were a better decision maker? Have you ever been really sure about something? Have you ever known the outcome of something, but didn’t have anywhere to record it and show off to friends? Have you ever found yourself watching Sports Center and thinking, “seems like that was a good game”? Maybe you didn’t even watch Sports Center because you had errands to run or something. ?!? Choices are our true freedom. They are the way we navigate through life and rationalize the madness and uncertainty of the World. Choices are the grease, the foundation, and the mostly unwritten rules of the Universe. Fortunately, it is easy to record your good decisions on the Internet! “Oof,” you are probably saying to yourself. Well I say withdraw that oof. I say you should choose right now between two outstanding choices: Go straight to the r...

The Official 2016 Pickem-Football Annual Recruitment Post

Dear Pickers, I would like to announce my candidacy for the office of commissioner of picking things in the upcoming 2016 football season. VOTE STRAIGHT TICKET AND SKIP TO THE END! As a longtime maker of decisions, and a self-proclaimed commissioner of football picks for fourteen years, I consider myself very fortunate to be able to preach these successes on the world wide web. My concentration and vision have kept me alive for some time now. And I’ve seen some stuff you guys. That stuff is depressing and offensive, and all I want to do now is use “progress” in this sentence. Now, more than ever, I think it’s time… it’s time to keep mostly the same blood, mostly the same faces, mostly the same thinking, and most importantly, some Pickem Dash Football Dot Com action. It’s also time to review our rules; our constitution if you will. In order to achieve personal picking growth, we must adopt a radically conservative and progressive avant-garde approach to avoid all of the bad st...

The Official 2015 Pickem-Football Annual Recruitment Post

For those of you who have grown up playing Pick'em Dash Football, you already know how important is has been in shaping your healthy lifestyle. However, for those who have had a more sedated, non-picking lifestyle, it’s time to get up off the youtubes (for a minute) and sign up for happiness . I'm  not talking about just turning on the tube for that Wednesday night high scoring thriller. You need to invest in football by getting doing things with your keyboard, mouse, or wireless pocket phone. Playing sports teach you a number of things about life blah blah blah. Picking sports makes your life meaningful, happier, and almost probably healthier. Now  I'm  not so presumptuous to assume you will just sign up on a whim based on the first two paragraphs. That’s preposterous, absurd, unreasonable, and everything that is the opposite of well-balanced. I'm going to write more paragraphs, and then  you'll  certainly want to give this a try. Picking is an important ...

The Official 2014 Pickem-Football Annual Recruitment Post

In no other game in history have there been so many choices. More choices mean more opportunities; more opportunities mean more potential to win and (possibly) defeat your enemies. Picking is easy, but picking football games successfully is only slightly more difficult than flipping a coin. Gang, whether you are a seasoned veteran or new to this game, you made a great choice today: reading this text. Your choices are truly what define you, and I know that you are perfect, maybe even born specifically, for the 2014 iteration of pickem-football. I got an email years ago: “Just what is pickem-football?” Friends, it is possibly one of the greatest tools to both casually follow along during the football season while also practicing your picking proficiency in life. “Sounds great, but how exactly to you plan on improving my life?”  The method is simple and effective. By presenting an abundance of choice. An elaborate buffet of choices. Quick, simple, choices. When you find your...

P-F13: Week 1 NCAA Card and Rules Refresher

The  Week  1 NCAA card is now live. hashtag letsdothis. The general due date for each week's card is before the kickoff the first game, which in this case means 8/29/13 5:00PM Central. We are doing Thursday games for Week 1, y'all. L ate picks totally happen, you guys, and I'll always take any pick that gets to me before the kickoff of a game.  But let's get this out of the way early: All your picks are time-stamped by the Google form, so don't even try with the "my iPhone lost my picks" excuse. Whatever. Google. Says. Goes. Also, I'm keeping the system I added last year where you can send partial cards or edits to your picks. If you fill out the form a second time, you only need to enter the picks you want to add/change and it will automatically be changed online. Note, the form won't stop you from making late picks or cheating, but I'll audit everything at the end of the week. Whatever. Google. Says. Goes. The Links: WEEK 1 CARD...

The Official 2013 Pick'em-Football Annual Recruitment Post

I'm a football fan. I may not have PhD level ability to break down personnel, scheme, etc., and football is one of a few sports I've never played in an organized league, but I totally geek out on football. I consume football in live form on television and in person, in news form on the Internet, and I even found myself watching classic games on the Big Ten Network last month (great production, by the way). I'm just saying, I like to watch. Naturally, I started my own league. It started when I was in college. The year was 1998, if memory serves. My girlfriend, now wife, suggested we start a league similar to one from the local news station to test our ability to pick game winners. I used my budding Excel skills to create a format to track our success. My dog played too, and he often won. From that innocuous suggestion came what is now the ritual and tradition, the pomp and the circumstance, the simple excellence of Pick'em. Fantasy sports provide a fantastic approa...

Like sands through the hourglass, you can't stop football season. And since you can't stop football season, you might as well enjoy it. And if there was any other way to enjoy football season, trust me, I would share it with you. Pick'em is the key. The Official Registration Form is the Keymaster. You are the Gatekeeper. Don't be your own blocker of fun. Please also do everything you can to convince your friends and neighbors to play. My burger metaphor over at TheFerm.org should do the trick. Looking forward to another great year. -Commish

(don't be shy... send this post to your friends and people that you just met on the rail)   Dear Football Picking Peoples, I don't know if you heard from ESPN or my good friend Gary, but football season is right around the corner. I'm dusting off the Pick'em Dash Football machine for another year of the most bestest football picking game on the Internets. Guaranteed or my money back. If there is one thing I've learned about human nature in my thirty-four years on this polluted Earth, it is that people LOVE change. If you played in the past, I promise that I'll surprise you with some change. If you haven't played before, holy bleep, I will make sure you get yourself some change... mid-season or something. I'm all about the change. Last year was the 10th season of this Pick'em contest. I can't remember the Y2K/millennium rules, but I think this August will mark the 10 year anniversary. Is that a diamond anniversary? Silver? Alumin...

2009 Week 1 NCAA Card

Pick'em peeps, welcome back or welcome in (whichever applies). After our card format poll, the Google Doc card won by a landslide. That means I've mothballed the old Excel format and I'll be adding features/functionality on the fly this year. But from a game picking perspective, things are the same. I'll post an official league rules post soon. In the mean time, here are some Pick'em card notes: - NCAA games are picked against the spread (NFL will be straight up). - Remember to check for bonus questions. I give away bonus points for answers, but these points DO NOT count toward your overall pickem score. To win the pickem contest, you have to have picked the most games right. Simple. - For those that have played before, Best Bets are out for now. There is not an easy way to incorporate them into the Google Doc card. - All picks are due before the kickoff of the first game. However, if you forget, still send me the card dude. I'll give you credit for any game ki...
